Various Types of Manufacturing Processes and Their Applications, Merits and Demerits

Different types of manufacturing processes are improving rapidly with the pace of technological development. This article will discuss the most popular manufacturing techniques of the industry and their applications.

Fig.1: Typical Manufacturing Process Schematics

Almost all the primary production processes fall under the following four categories:

  1. Casting
  2.

  3. Forming
  4.

  5. Joining
  6.

  7. Machining
  8.

However, if you expand the categories then you will definitely be overwhelmed by the numbers hidden under them. So, if you want to make list of the noted ones among them, then probably the following thirty one processes  is quite a answer of the question: “what are the different types of manufacturing process are there based on popularity?”

1. Sand Casting Process and its Applications: Sand casting is the most widely used foundry production process….

2. Gravity Die Casting Process and its Applications: The only difference between the sand casting and gravity die casting process lies in the construction of the mold….

3. Investment Casting Process or Lost Wax Casting Process and its Applications: This is the only casting process where normally single piece mold cavity is used….

4. Squeeze Casting Process and its Applications: The squeeze casting process has quite similarity with the injection molding…

5. Centrifugal Casting Process and its Applications: As the name indicates, the centrifugal force plays important role for this kind of casting process…

6. Sheet Metal Forming Process and its Applications: Most of the sheet metal components you can see around you are manufactured by this manufacturing process….

7. Sheet Metal Punching Process and its Applications: Whenever you notice a cut or hole in a sheet metal components, you should remember the punching process…

8. Stamping Process and its Applications: The coins of your purse are manufactured by this process…

9. Shot Pinning Process and its Applications: The dirty looking casting surfaces become beautiful by this process…

10. Cold Rolling Process and its Applications: You make the wheat dough; this is the similar production process…

11. Hot Rolling Process and its Applications: Rolling after applying heat….

12. Forging Process and its Applications: Have you ever observed how the blacksmiths shape the red hot components, same manufacturing process here…

13. Injection Molding Process and its Applications: As the name suggests, inject the materials to mold….

14. Blow Molding Process and its Applications: See the pet bottle there, and remember blow molding…

15. Turning process and its Application: The first thing I learned during my manufacturing process class…

16. Drilling Process and its Applications: Almost all the non-sheet metal and non-plastic holes are created by this method…

17. Milling Process and its Applications: For large amount of material removal, you should ideally go for milling…

18. Grinding Process and its Applications: Rub the materials off by this process…

19. Lapping Process and its Applications: You can make metallic mirror by this process…

20. Honing Process and its Applications: Finish the surface by slow itching…

21. Fusion Welding Process and its Applications: Most of the fabrications are done by this process…

22. Friction Welding Process and its Applications: It is the welding by friction…

23. Brazing Process and its Applications: Joints of dissimilar materials…

24. Soldering Process and its Applications: The joints between PCB and the wires are by soldering…

25. Gas Cutting Process and its Applications: It’s cutting of metals by the gas jet…

26. Laser Cutting Process and its Applications: Cutting by laser beam…

27. Electrical discharge machining or EDM Process and its Applications: How will you make titanium components?…

28. Stereolithography or rapid prototyping or 3D printing and its Application: Draw the components in your PC and click the print button and the part is manufactured…

29. Abrasive Jet Machining (AJM) Process and its Applications: Jet of abrasive particles are used for machining…

30. Powder metallurgy (pressing and sintering) and its Applications: It’s like creating clay model using metallic powder…

31. Laminated Object Manufacturing Process and its Applications: Manufacturing process by assembling the layers…

The aim of this article is to give you the most elaborative list of the production process hence I tried ungroup them at the max. I will keep updating this list of the different types of manufacturing process by adding newer manufacturing techniques.
